Aurangabad – In a move that has sparked significant debate across the state, the Maharashtra government has appointed Manoj Jadhav, a senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Maharashtra State Haj Committee.

This appointment marks the first time in the history of the committee that a non-Muslim official has been chosen to lead the administrative body responsible for the annual Haj pilgrimage. Jadhav takes over the role from the outgoing CEO.

A Shift in Tradition

Historically, the position of CEO has been held by members of the Muslim community, given the role's deep involvement in religious logistics and the specific sensitivities of the pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina. While government officials maintain that the role is strictly administrative, the decision has met with mixed reactions from community leaders and legal experts.

Community Concerns

Several prominent figures have voiced their apprehensions regarding the appointment: Religious Sensitivities: Critics argue that the CEO must manage complex religious requirements, including coordination with Saudi authorities who restrict non-Muslim entry into holy sites.

Legal Challenges:Dr.Riyaz Deshmukh  former DCP has termed the move "unprecedented" and suggested that it may be challenged in court, citing that Hindu religious trusts generally do not permit non-Hindu members in similar administrative capacities.

Logistical Expertise: Supporters of the move, however, point to Jadhav's extensive administrative experience, suggesting that his professional background will ensure efficient handling of travel, accommodation, and safety for the 2026 pilgrimage season.

Looking Ahead to Haj 2026

The appointment comes at a critical time as preparations for Haj 2026 (tentatively scheduled for late May) are already underway. The committee is tasked with managing the quotas and logistics for thousands of pilgrims from Maharashtra.

The state government has yet to issue an official statement responding to the concerns, but the focus remains on ensuring a smooth and organized experience for the upcoming pilgrimage season.
