New Delhi:- The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed a petition challenging a circular issued by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) regarding the national song, 'Vande Mataram'. The apex court clarified that singing the song is not a mandatory requirement at public or other events.
The Court observed that the circular issued by the Home Ministry is merely a set of guidelines or directives. It does not carry any legal obligation that makes the singing of 'Vande Mataram' binding on citizens. The bench refused to entertain a petition filed by Mohammad Sayeed Noori, who had moved the court against the MHA’s circular.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court noted that there is no provision that makes the rendition of the song compulsory, thereby maintaining the status quo on its voluntary nature.
