New Delhi:-India is all set to embark on its historic, first-ever Digital Census starting April 1st. Moving away from traditional paper-based methods, the 2026 Census will utilize a specialized mobile application to collect data across the country. The government has finalized a comprehensive 'Question Bank' consisting of 33 specific questions aimed at capturing the socio-economic pulse of every household.

The questions are designed to go beyond a simple head-count, focusing on the quality of life and access to resources. Citizens will be asked about the materials used for their roof, walls, and floors, as well as the ownership status of their residence. Detailed information regarding the primary source of drinking water, types of lighting, and the specific fuel used for cooking (e.g., LPG, Piped Gas, or Electricity) will be recorded. The list includes queries about vehicles (bicycles, motorcycles, or cars) and communication devices like smartphones, laptops, and internet connectivity.

For the first time, specific details regarding the types of food grains consumed by households are being highlighted to understand nutritional trends.By shifting to a digital platform, the government aims to ensure higher data accuracy and faster processing. The "Self-Enumeration" feature will also allow citizens to fill in their details through a dedicated portal, reducing the burden on door-to-door enumerators.

Officials have emphasized that the data collected is strictly confidential and will be used solely for the formulation of public welfare schemes and infrastructure planning. This data will help identify gaps in healthcare, education, and sanitation services.
