Mumbai: The Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai (IIT Bombay) is one of India's premier institutes for technology and higher education. Established in 1958 at Powai, Mumbai, this institution has made significant contributions to the nation in the fields of engineering, technology, science, management, and research.
However, if incidents of student deaths are occurring on the campus of such a prestigious institution that drives the country's scientific and technological progress, it is extremely necessary to seriously investigate the reasons behind them. Regarding this, a delegation of the MNS Vidyarthi Sena met IIT Bombay Director Dr. Suresh Kedare, Deputy Director Dr. Ravindra Guddi, and Secretary Dr. Bhave to demand answers, but received vague responses from them.
In the past year, incidents of suicide involving four students—Rohit Sinha (22), Naman Agarwal (21), Sohil Sangwan (20), and Sahil Wakode (19)—have come to light.
Among them, Sahil Wakode was a promising student from Vidarbha's Yavatmal district in Maharashtra. He came to IIT Bombay with dreams of higher education; however, he met a tragic end. What exactly happened that compelled a young student to take such an extreme step to end his life? The answer to this question remains unclear.
This is not merely a tragedy for four families; it is a serious question standing before the nation's higher education system.
President of Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena, Amit Raj Thackeray, will follow up on all these incidents through a fact-based and legal approach, and will continuously raise this issue until answers regarding student safety are provided.
It is the responsibility of the institution to provide students not just an education, but a safe, sensitive, and supportive academic environment.
The MNS Vidyarthi Sena delegation was attended by Santosh Gangurde (General Secretary), Pramod Mandhare (Secretary), Nitin Nanavare (Secretary), Prashant Parulekar (Vice President), Govind Joil (Deputy Division President), Rahul Kadam (Branch Secretary), Vaibhav Devkar (Student Organizer), Pravin Nadar (Deputy Branch President), Akash Sonawane (Branch Secretary) and etc present at that time.
