NAGPUR: In a major relief for thousands of aspiring and in-service teachers, the Maharashtra State Examination Council has announced that the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) will now be conducted twice a year. This decision follows a landmark ruling by the Supreme Court, making the qualification mandatory for all teachers instructing Classes 1 to 8.
The Supreme Court has mandated that all teachers—except those with less than five years of service remaining before retirement—must clear the TET within the next two years. Failure to do so could lead to compulsory retirement or the loss of their positions.
Speaking on the development, Dr. Nandkumar Bedse, Chairman of the State Examination Council, stated that the council plans to conduct a total of four exams over the next 24 months to ensure every teacher has an adequate opportunity. Exams will be held every six months (typically in the May-June and November-December windows).
To ensure transparency and prevent malpractice, the council will implement mandatory Aadhaar verification during registration and at exam centers.
The ruling impacts teachers appointed even before 2013, many of whom were previously exempt from the requirement.
The exam remains a qualifying test with the following score requirements:
> General Category: 60% (90 out of 150 marks)
> Reserved Categories: 55% (82.5 out of 150 marks)
Recently, there has been some debate regarding the "half-mark" rounding for reserved categories (82 vs. 83 marks). The Council has clarified that the final results, reflecting the 11.28% passing rate for the most recent session, are being processed to resolve these discrepancies.
